Abstract:

Agricultural diploma students were assessed for their self-perceived competence in crop and soil science, animal science and agricultural management. Using a random sampling technique a sample of 268 graduating students was selected from a total population of 500 students during a field practical training using a data collection instrument that had portions for demographic information, crop and soil science tasks, animal science tasks and agricultural management tasks. Competence was measured using a 4-point Likert-type scale of 1 = not competent, 2 = slightly competent, 3 = competent and 4 = very competent. The results were analysed using SPSS 18 software package. Overall student incompetence was observed in most of the tasks. The majority of female students were agricultural management major students. Students indicated competence in two (6.66%) of the agricultural management tasks. Male students had competence in 33.3% of animal science tasks while females indicated competency in 13.3% of the tasks. Male students had competence in 33.3% of the crop and soil science tasks while their female counterparts had competence in 21.2% of the tasks. It is suggested that faculty revisit the entire program course content especially that of agricultural management and the delivery strategies in order to meet students’ and employers’ needs.
