Abstract:

The objective of this study is to determine the concentration of heavy metals in the irrigation waters and sediment samples from Mati and Gjanica rivers. The samples were collected in one -week period (1 June -30 August) and were analyzed for the presence of the heavy metals Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd, Ni and Cr. The analysis of the heavy metals is carried out by the Public Health Institute in Tirana. The concentration of the metals’ traces Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd, Ni and Cr, were determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The contents of the elements analysed were within the determined parameters from the Albanian State Standard Catalogue (SSC). As result of the analysis of the water and the sediments we concluded that the sites of Mat and Gjanica are the most contaminated areas with these heavy metals which demonstrate the high risk of their accumulation in the soil. The most likely key reasons for such a result is the geological construction of the north Albania and the existence of a considerable number of mines dealing with excavation of chromium, copper and also the spilling of the residues of the heavy industry and the processing industry of petroleum into the region of Fier.
