Abstract:

In recent years, there was a high demanding to develop sustainable aquaculture which kept stocking density and pollution loadings under environmental capacity. In order to assess the efficiency of the nitrogen cycle in pond, the protease, urease, TN and NH4+-N contents in sediment in poly-culture ponds stocking mainly grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idellus) were studied. The results showed that the protease and urease activities in sediment fluctuated during the culture period. TN contents were relative low. NH4+-N contents fluctuated. The results of the Pearson correlation tests showed that there was only a significant positive correlation (p<0.01) between urease activities and NH4+-N contents. This meant that there were no significant substrate induction between protease and the nitrogen, and also no production repression mechanism between urease and NH4+-N in sediment. According to the dynamics of enzyme activities and the nitrogen contents, the nitrogen cycle efficiency was high and there was no nitrogen accumulating in poly-culture ponds.
