Space, markets and rural production in Sub-Saharan Africa: A conceptual model

Abstract:

The linkages between biophysical resources, markets and rural production are studied in the context of production systems, population change and socio-economic transformation. Using new economic geography framework as an initial platform, secondary data on real GDP growth and country performance in the period 1995-2011 are used to generate critical inputs. The results  indicate impressive performance in economic growth set into motion by aggressive socio-economic policies since 1990. But structural distortions in market development and linkages undermine possibilities of increased production within SSA. Critical inputs are then re-configured into a conceptual growth model geared at facilitating the transformation of rural production systems. The model has direct implications in understanding the way rural production systems operate.
