Abstract:

Our knowledge of the genetic base of the fall dormancy of turfgrass is still limited. Furthermore, little is known about the comprehensive cold resistance characteristics of Zoysia turfgrass. The object of this study was to understand the effection of plant growth retardants on cold resistance in Zoysia turfgrass, to better understand cold resistance of the warm season turfgrass. In this experiment, Zoysia (Zoysia japonica Steud.) cultivar Explorer was used as representative of warm-season. Warm-season turfgrass samples were put into incubator, illuminating treatment time in incubator was 8 hours preliminar, and illuminating treatment intensity was 12000 LUX. Temperature for sample was consistently 25°C. After being put into incubator for 24 hours, as the first samples, some turfgrass roots and leaves were taken. After the first sampling, turfgrass in beakers were treated with different concentration uniconazole and paclobutrazol respectively, the other beaker turfgrass invariable. The samples were taken 4 times in different time to determine certain physiological traits in turfgrass roots and leaves systems. The result shows that the contents of soluble sugar and soluble protein increased in Zoysia turfgrass leaves and roots systems, proline concentrations and SOD activity increased significantly in Zoysia turfgrass leaves, contents of MDA in Zoysia turfgrass leaves decreased at the same time, after being used paclobutrazol and uniconazole. Then the cold resistance of Zoysia turfgrass was improved. Especially, the effect of 200  ml/l uniconazole and 400 ml/l paclobutrazol were better than other concentration of the plant growth retardants.
