Influence of mountains on extreme rainfall in semi-arid areas of Europe: The Sierra de los Filabres (SE Spain) a case of study

Abstract:

Mountains play an important role in climate, especially for semi-arid areas, but so far has not been measured their influence on extreme rainfall. Climatic and hydrological data in nine climatic stations situated in the top of mountain and around of Los Filabres range, one of the most arid places in Europe, has been taken eleven years along. Gumbel, Exponential, Gamma, Normal and Lognormal statistical distributions were evaluated as useful tool for lack of data of a period can be fitted. A set of 10, 20, 30 minutes, 1, 2, 3, 6, 12 and 24 hours yearly extreme values has been calculated. In this contribution, it has been observed that there is no a best distribution for representing the extremes of precipitation in semi-arid areas. Gumbel distribution appears better in a larger number of stations; in addition, it is the best for an altitude of 400 to 1000 m above sea level, but Gamma distribution is better in average for rainfall durations; this statistical distribution is no longer used in this topic. Consequently, these results open up new perspectives for the study of extreme rainfall events in semi-arid areas in Europe.
