Abstract:

Groundwater is a significant source of drinking water. Nitrogen fertilizers can supply large quantities of N to arable soils but also increase the amount of nitrate at risk to leaching. The aim of this study was to establish how organic fertilizers affect the leaching of nutrients into ground water. Research was carried out in five monitoring wells (Nos. 40878 - 40882) that were installed in 2006 at the hydrodynamic and hydro-chemical research site at Aleksandras Stulginskis University. In 2008, the site was fertilized with organic fertilizers, horn shavings, and the well water was tested for nitrite, nitrate, ammonium ions and phosphate. The results show that ammonium ion content did not increase in well water after the use of organic fertilizers (differences were statistically insignificant p > 0.05), while the content of nitrate, nitrite and phosphate increased significantly (differences are statistically significant p < 0.05).
