Abstract:In this article we try to argue that the neoinstitutional paradigm offers support in what is called the management of environmental assets through several strong topics, such as property rights, transaction costs and externalities. Starting with underlying the role played by formal and informal institutions, both old and new institutional schools of thought suggest that human behaviour can be shaped, through culture and education, in a way that meets the social and economic objectives of sustainable development. Therefore, being confident that the theory of sustainable development has much to gain if it is willing to conduct further research in the field of institutionalism, we will focus on each of the mentioned topics in our motivation to link, from a theoretical perspective, these two lines of research.
