Abstract:

Soil water retention curve (SWRC) represents the relationship of unsaturated soil between water pressure head and soil water content. A simple testing approach is used to measure the soil water retention curve (SWRC). Two soil water retention curves (SWRC) are measured with the pressure plate device of limited to matric suctions ≤900 mba. The van Genuchten models have been proposed to describe the SWRC from saturation to sand and silty using measurements in the pressure plate matric suction range. In this study, we obtained the relationship of soil water suction and soil water content of the soil samples. Soil water characteristic parameters of sand and silty clay were both parameterised by fitting the van Genuchten equation. When the model parameters were obtained from water retention data in the range of 0-900 mba, the residual and square of residual values are very small (1.43E-004 and 2.90E-004, respectively) than that of allowed value (5.00E-004). The van Genuchten model 20 can be an accurate estimatior of the soil water retention curve.
