Abstract:

The root and rhizome of Salvia miltiorrhiza have been used as traditional Chinese medicine for centuries, but its leaf, the abandoned part at harvest time, also possesses considerable phenolics with significant antioxidant activity. The effects of UV-B radiation (208-320 nm) on phenolics content and antioxidant activity in its leaf were evaluated for controlling the quality of medicinal materials and for the potential in industrial use as botanical extract. Lower does UV-B radiation (560 J m-2 d-1) did not increase phenolics content after 6 days, while it significantly increased under enhanced radiation (950 J m-2 d-1) from 24 h. In both radiation doses, the activity of antioxidant enzymes drastically increased to the highest at 24 h, after when the relatively higher level was maintained till to 6th day. These results indicate that plant prefer to be against lower does UV-B radiation through increasing the activity of antioxidant enzymes, but phenolic compounds would be produced in short-term period to avoid much more stress if higher dose radiation was continuously met. Enhanced UV-B radiation significantly increases the phenolics content in S. miltiorrhiza leaf and offers an exciting potentiality for its industrial use as botanical extract, food or cosmetics supplements that are rich in antioxidants.
