Effect of provenance, stratification and temperature on the germination of European hophornbeam (Ostrya carpinifolia Scop.) seeds

Abstract:

In this study, the effects of provenance, stratification and temperature on the germination of European hophornbeam (Ostrya carpinifolia Scop.) seeds were investigated. Seed samples were collected from seven different provenances (Kastamonu, Düzce, Antalya-Finike, Antalya-Akseki, Adana, Niğde and Zonguldak) in Turkey. The stratification treatments were control, 2 months cold + 2 months naked warm stratification (2MC+2MW) treatment, 1MW+2MC naked, 1MW+1MC+1MW in perlite, 1MW+2MC in perlite and 2MC in perlite. Germination tests were made at the constant temperatures of 15 and 20°C, and variable temperatures of 15/5°C (8/16 h), 20/10°C (8/16 h) and 25/5°C (8/16 h). Results showed that provenance, stratification, temperature and their interactions had significant effects on germination (p<0.05). Considering the factor means, the highest incidence of germination was obtained in Kastamonu provenance, under 2MC naked stratification and at 15/5°C germination temperature. The provenance x stratification x temperature interaction also showed that Kastamonu provenance had the highest germination percentage (92%) under 1MW+2MC and 2MW treatments in perlite and at a germination temperature of 15/5°C. Overall, the lowest germination percentage was observed in Nigde and Zonguldak provenances. The study results showed that Turkish European hophornbeam seeds require at least eight to ten weeks for germination. In addition, low temperatures, especially variable low temperatures, affect germination success.
