Abstract:

Agricultural non-point source pollution has attracted a great deal of public attention. Taking the Sanjiang Plain in Northeast China as the study area, adapting the ECM model, and using the MODIS land cover product, this paper estimated NPS pollution in the Sanjiang Plain during 2001-2011. The results show that: agricultural NPS pollution is a serious problem in the Sanjiang Plain in recent years; TN and TP loads generally declined during 2001-2011 despite a slight increase during 2008-2010; most areas suffered from high TN and TP loads except for small portions in the West, East and South of the study area; and NPS pollutant loads in Fujin, Baoqing and Hulin were found to be the highest with Youyi having the highest load strength. The main cause of the NPS pollution decline during 2001-2011 was a reduction in cropland. Serious attention should be given to NPS pollution control in the central and Northeast of the Sanjiang Plain.
