Effects of drip irrigation on Berberis thunbergii ‘Atropurpurea Nana’

Abstract:

Having emerged as a result of rapid industrialization since the early 20th century, global warming can negatively affect natural resources, particularly water resources. Climate changes resulting from global warming threaten the viability of ornamental plant species used in urban landscaping. This study investigates the effects of drip irrigation on Berberis thunbergii ‘Atropurpurea Nana’. Between 2011 and 2012, for Berberis thunbergii ‘Atropurpurea Nana’ plant (P), two different irrigation levels (I1 100%, I2 75%), fertilizer regimes (F1 with fertilizer, F2 without fertilizer) and planting ranges (PR1 30 cm, PR2 45 cm) were tested. The first irrigation was made in 40 cm depth up to the farm capacity. The next regular irrigation (I1 group) was sufficient to bring the existing humidity to farm capacity and I2 until the existing water of the soil reaches the 75% of available water holding capacity. The greatest water consumption was in parcel PI1 F1 PR1 and the lowest consumption was in parcel PI2 F2 PR2. As irrigation level, fertilizer and planting range are effective on trials and 25% water limitation does not negatively affect the development of Berberis thunbergii ‘Atropurpurea Nana’, it is concluded that irrigation levels of 75% soil water holding capacity can enable important water savings. According to the results, landscape architecture projects should specify the drip irrigation method to achieve more efficient irrigation with available water resources and provide water savings.
