Methodology developed for the removal of hydrogen sulfide from biogas using iron III

Abstract:

The aim of this paper was to verify the removal of hydrogen sulfide from gas streams through redox reaction using Fe(III) and the addition of oxygen in the filter for the regeneration of the Fe(III). The tests were carried out in laboratory-scale (bench) and in field using a PVC filter. The tests in laboratory were carried out at Western Parana State University, UNIOESTE, Toledo, in the Physics-chemistry/Instrumental Analysis Laboratory. The field tests were carried out with a digester in private property in the district of Concórdia, Toledo, West of Parana. The methylene blue methodology was used for the analyses followed by UV-VIS spectroscopy. The study shows that solutions of Fe(III) 0.1 and 0.2 M in pH 7 and pH 10 were efficient in the removal of hydrogen sulfide. In the field tests, to prove the efficiency of the solution, they were renewed before and after with oxygen. Hydrogen sulfide removal was superior to 90% in some cases, and its efficiency in the renewed filter was superior to 70%.
