Abstract:

Climate change is a development challenge that many African countries face. In Nigeria, climate change is further aggravating poverty among farm households. Because of its agrarian nature, this study analyzed vulnerability of crop farmers to climate change in a selected Local Government Area of Oyo state. The study seeks to itemize the different ways farmers have been affected by climatic shocks determine the correlates of their vulnerability. Data were randomly collected from eighty-one farmers from ten villages. The data were analyzed with descriptive methods, factor analysis and Ordinary Least Square (OLS) regression. Results show that the farmers were affected in different ways by climate change and many resorted into praying. Changing of the type of crops grown and time of planting reduced vulnerability, while planting of different varieties increased it. Farmers that were married and those that have many years of farming experience have higher level of vulnerability. The study underscores the need to devise adequate adaptation for the farmers in order to ensure adequate mitigation of climate change impacts, among others.
