Implementation of the fire safety programme: A case study on the oil and gas industry in Terengganu

Abstract:

Fire is one of the main risk factor to the oil and gas industry. This is because it involves the handling of risky materials and machineries that can easily cause fire. Fire can cause harm to human life, destruction of properties as well as causing a great deal of monetary losses. The objective of this research is to evaluate the relationship between the several safety elements amongst the management and employees at the Export Terminal of an Oil and Gas Company in Kemaman, Terengganu. As a centre for storage, loading, unloading and transportation of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), the Export Terminal emphasises on occupational health and safety. This study was conducted using the hypothesis experiment technique through the Pearson Chi Square statistical test analysis. The statistical analysis was conducted to find out the existence of a relationship between the variables experimented on 43 selected respondents. For that purpose, two sets of questionnaires were distributed, i.e. to the management group and the employees’ group. Six hypotheses experiments were conducted. The result shows the existence of significant relationships between the several fire safety elements studied, such as the existence of a significant relationship between the reminders to employees and the compliance of emergency procedures. It was also discovered there existed a significant relationship between the preparation of campaign and the level of the employees’ awareness and between the adequacy of fire safety programme provided and the level of the workers awareness.
