Abstract:

Pluchea lanceolata, an invasive alien species, is an obnoxious weed in several parts of Uttar Pradesh. This species has been shown to alter the habitat characteristics. A pot experiment was conducted to examine the allelopathic effect of P. lanceolata aqueous extract on growth and yield of okra. Aqueous extract was prepared by soaking 500 g shade dried P. lanceolata whole plant in 2 litres of double distilled water for 48 h. Okra plants were raised in 30 cm earthen pots and 100 ml P. lanceolata extract (PE25, PE50, PE75 and PE100) was poured in each pot at 2 leaf, 15 day and 30 day stages. The results showed a strong negative correlation between P. lanceolata extract concentrations on growth, yield and antioxidant parameters of okra. Considerable decrease in growth and yield parameters was recorded at 15 and 30 day sampling stages but at 45 day stage PE25 of aqueous extract caused slight but statistically non significant increase in all parameters, whereas activity of antioxidants enzymes shows a trend of increment as concentrations increases.
