Abstract:

Various factors can threaten the global as well as local food security. Impact of climate change is one of the worrying factors that could affect the food resources availability, accessibility, utilisation, and stability over time. When one or more of the four components of food security is unstable and insecure, the whole food system will be consequently vulnerable. However, most of the studies that examined the nexus between climate change and food security had mainly focused on the impact of climate change and the issue of food availability, particularly the agricultural food production. Whereas, other elements of the food security concept include access, utilisation, and stability are still not widely explored. Therefore, apart from highlighting issues that were extensively discussed, the main objective of this review was to present and summarize some of the issues that are still less understood. Based on extensive literature review, this paper discusses issues that link the impacts of climate change on agricultural food with respect to all components of the food security concept. In general, the impacts of climate change will not only affect the availability and stability of food resources at the macro level but also the micro level, which involves household access and utilisation. As a result, inequalities may be accentuated across and within regions, countries and communities. Moreover, the impact of climate change on farm productivity and per capita food production can have severe consequences for selfsufficient, income distribution and quality of life. Hence, a multipronged strategy, combining adaptation and mitigation at every dimension of food security, is deemed necessary.
