Abstract:

This study aimed at examining the determinants of profitability of poultry production in Oyo State, Nigeria. A multistage sampling procedure followed by cluster sampling technique was used to draw sample from communities from Local Government Areas in Oyo state. Data were collected using structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive (frequency and percentage) and inferential statistics (Chi-square, PPMC, and multiple linear regression). The results revealed that majority of the farmers were 45–54 years of age, 89.4% were male and 81.9% were married with average household size of 4 persons. The majority (73.8%) had tertiary education and 43.1% had 5–11 years of experience in poultry production with an average income of 1,242,119 naira. The results revealed that majority of the respondents (96.3%) reared layers and use battery cage as a system of production. The chi-square analysis showed significant relationship between educational background (χ2 = 478.938, p = 0.028) and profitability of poultry production while the Pearson product-moment correlation also showed significant relationship between years of experience (r = 0.246, p = 0.002), monthly income (r = 0.200, p = 0.011) and farm size (r = -0.259, p = 0.001) and profitability of poultry production. Regression analysis showed that age, years of farming experience, farm size, cost of battery cage, low cost of feeds, cost of other inputs and cost of chick determine profitability of poultry production. The study recommends that government should subsidize the price of feeds and other inputs such as drugs. Financial institutions such as banks and  microfinance houses should make loans available to real farmers with a single digit interest rate and without collateral to enable them access the loan.
