Abstract:

The poultry industry in India has undergone a paradigm shift in structure and spectacular growth inspite of several challenges over the years. At present, due to constant threat of adverse seasonal environment and abnormal increase in input cost, the poultry sector is highly prone to production and market risk, which enforce the poultry farmers to participate in contract broiler farming with the integrated companies. Presently, measurement of efficiency is an important issue in broiler farming. In the face of stiff completion among private integrators in India, efficiency can ensure sustainability in long run. This paper also employed a two stage Data Envelopment Analysis technique to measure the technical, allocative and economic efficiency of the contract broiler farmers. A micro-empirical survey was conducted to generate valuable information on productivity performance of the contract farmers through measurement of efficiency and effect of seasonal variation on the performance of contract farmers in rural West Bengal. The empirical evidence revealed that performance of the farmers was highly influenced by the seasonal condition. The study revealed a satisfactory performance during June to December in comparison to the remaining five months (January to May). The empirical finding of the study also revealed that farm size played an important role in determining the efficiency of contract broiler farming. As the farm size increases efficiency of the farmers also increases. Based on findings some important policy recommendations in ensuring efficiency in contract broiler farming system are drawn.
