Abstract:

India is the major producer of areca nut. The production is dominant in the coastal region within 400 km from the coastal line states of India. It is widely used as a masticator for chewing purposes, vegetable, medicine, stimulant, timber, fuel wood etc. Now with many states restoring the ban, there is a need to think about the alternative uses of areca nut and it is impacting on various families which are dependent on the areca cultivation. In this paper, case study of three different people from Karnataka state is provided who involved themselves in innovation in areca nut production and its usage is presented. Further this study also includes the perception of 50 areca growers about the innovation in areca nut cultivation.
