Abstract:

Agriculture is one of the largest private sectors in India. The role of agriculture in contribution to our nation’s security and also strengthening the national sovereignty is highly noted but so far it remains unorganized sector. A productive, competitive, diversified and sustainable agriculture needs to emerge at an accelerated pace integrated with technical and traditional knowledge. Sustainable agriculture is an evolving concept of identifying the basic ideas, practices and policies and it may help in carrying out the research agenda and priorities and can also suggest practical steps that may be appropriate for moving towards sustainable agriculture. The advent of the concept of sustainable agriculture in late eighties in Indian agricultural scenario has evoked interest on indigenous technical or traditional knowledge that has the element of use of natural product to solve the problems pertaining to agriculture and allied activities. In agricultural fields, the perfection of traditional empirical methods can give rise to its integration with scientific technology. The agricultural sector in North Eastern Region also lacks a focus on growth, social equity, and sustainable livelihoods. The traditional practices and knowledge among the tribal people of North East India need to be harnessed along with some technical inputs to bring about the process of sustainable development faster
