Abstract:

In countries like India, where the population pressure is continuously increasing, land and water resources are limited and their wide utilization is imperative. The morphometric analysis of the drainage basin and channel network play an important role in understanding the geohydrological behaviour of the drainage basin and expresses the prevailing climate, geology, geomorphology and structural antecedents of the catchment. The interaction and interrelationships between various geomorphological and hydrological elements can be explained quantitatively through morphometric analysis. Morphometric analysis of the drainage basin expresses fully the state of dynamic balance that has been attained due to dealings between matter and energy. In the present study, morphometric analysis has been carried out using Geographical Information System (GIS) techniques to assess the geo-hydrological characteristics of Vaippar drainage basin. The morphometric parameters include linear, areal and relief aspects. Morphometric analysis of the river basins is considered to be the most satisfactory method because it enables in understanding the relationship of the various aspects within a drainage basin and a comparative evaluation can be made for different drainage basins developed in different geomorphological and topographical conditions. The present study reveals that the morphometric analysis based on GIS technique is a competent tool for geohydrological studies. These studies are very useful for identifying and planning the ground water potential zones and watershed management. Arc GIS software was used to calculate measures such as number of streams, length of streams, area and elevation. These are used to estimate other parameters relating to linear, areal and relief aspects in each sub basin of the study area. The understanding of these aspects will be helpful for the further planning and development of the sub basins in the study area.
