Vaccination, a major control measure against pest of small ruminants in Cross River State, Nigeria

Abstract:A retrospective study of the vaccination measures undertaken by the Veterinary Clinic, Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria, between September 1990 and December 1991 revealed that a total of 47,287 sheep and goats were vaccinated against pest of small ruminants with tissue culture rinderpest vaccine (TCRV). Of this number 26,557 goats representing 56.16% and 20,730 sheep representing 43.83% were vaccinated. In Ugep (Yakurr) Local Government Area, a total of 17,408 animals (sheep and goats) representing 36.81% were vaccinated within the period: 14,215 goats representing 30.06% in Obudu; 7,112 animals (sheep and goats) representing 15.04% in Ogoja; 3,802 sheep representing 8.04% in Ikom; 3500 sheep representing 7.04% in Akamkpa; 830 goats representing 1.76% in Calabar and 420 sheep representing 0.89% were vaccinated in Odukpani.
