Abstract:

In order to analyse drought conditions in Khuzestan province (southwest of Iran), averages of annual and monthly rainfall values of 16 synoptic and climatological stations in the study area for 31-years period (1973-2003) were studied. To perform the study, at first, the annual average rainfall values with different return periods in a drought period were estimated using statistical methods and the best statistical distributions. Then, using dimensionless ratio of estimated rainfall in each return period to annual mean precipitation (P/Pmean), the iso-ratio maps of the area were prepared for each return period. It is clear that lesser the ratio is, more critical the drought conditions are. The results of the study indicated that for smaller return periods, the areas of west, south and southwest of the province had more critical situations and whatever the return period increases, these areas would shift to the northern part of the province. As a result, by using this dimensionless index it would be possible to evaluate the areas at drought risk and various return periods.
