New evidences for production, biochemistry and in vitro and in vivo effects of tripeptides Val-Pro-Pro and Ile-Pro-Pro

Hypertension is one of the most common worldwide diseases that afflict humans. Typically, lifestyle changes, including adopting a healthy diet, are recommended for people with an elevated blood pressure. Tripeptides Val-Pro-Pro (VPP) and Ile-Pro-Pro (IPP), as part of a food product or as nutraceutical, have been developed to prevent and treat hypertension. Some unsupportive evidences for VPP and IPP, however, have been reported since 2008. This paper aims to review the new data for production, molecular recognition, in vitro effects, bioavailability, animal and clinical effects, and safety of the two tripeptides.
