Abstract:

Agriculture is mainly classified as a diffuse source of soil and water pollution. The main goal of the study was to assess the impact of agriculture on pollution of percolating water by total nitrogen. Research was conducted in the eastern Croatia. Quantities of percolating water in the period 2002 - 2009 ranged from 158.5 to 261.5 mm. It was also found that mean concentrations of total nitrogen (N) in percolating water sporadically exceeded the values of maximum allowable concentrations (MAC) which are prescribed by the regulations. Annual quantities of nitrogen leached from lysimeters with percolating water per monitoring site fluctuated from 4.10  to 63.0 kg N ha-1. The results point to the general conclusion that traditional agricultural production in the research area constitutes a potential threat of considerable pollution of water by nitrogen.
