Abstract:

A two-year field experiment was conducted to investigate the vertical distribution and attenuation ratio of different forms of nitrogen and phosphorus along the depth of controlled drainage(CD) ditch water, as well as loads of nitrogen and phosphorus from CD and uncontrolled drainage (UCD) ditch. The results indicate that the concentration of total nitrogen (TN) and ammoniacal nitrogen (AN) as well as total phosphorus (TP) of the ditch water declined with increase of depth in CD. Concentrations of TN and AN of CD ditch water were significantly lower in the top layer than  in the middle and bottom layer and the attenuation ratio of TN and AN in the top layer was also higher, suggesting that the current controlled drainage method which discharged surplus water from bottom hole by water gate was not favored for reducing pollution. CD had a significant environmental effect during the 2 years of measurement. Compared with UCD ditch water discharge from CD ditch decreased 50% in 2009 and 45% in 2010, losses of TP and TN decreased 69.8% and 69.4% in 2009 and 54% and 59% in 2010, respectively. The results above suggested that controlled drainage of ditch from surface in paddy field was an environmental friendly management of agricultural water in rainy region.
