Abstract:

The high resolution proxy data are required, due to the limitation of climatic variability before instrumental records. Variations in radical growth of Picea purpurea Mast were used to develop tree-ring width chronology in Siguniang Mountains of West Sichuan Plateau, China. Climate-growth correlation analysis showed that tree-ring growth was mainly influenced by average June-July temperature variability. Based on tree-ring width chronology, we developed the average June-July temperature reconstruction for the past 358 years (A.D. 1653-2010). Our reconstruction showed a strong temperature signal and revealed eight warm periods (A.D. 1653-1684, 1689-1709, 1717-1735, 1743-1762, 1824-1868, 1875-1889, 1905-1964, 1981-1998) and eight cold periods (A.D. 1685-1688, 1710-1716, 1736-1742, 1763-1823, 1869-1874, 1890-1904, 1965-1980, 1999-2010). Sixty-seven very warm years and 57 very cold years occurred during the past 358 years, accounting for 18.7% and 15.9% of total, respectively. Our reconstruction agreed in general with other tree-ring and ice core based temperature reconstructions from nearby regions on a decadal timescale, and also was consistent with recorded glacier fluctuations and in the surrounding high mountains.
