Abstract:

An endophytic bacterial strain PZ-4 that can significantly inhibit phytopathogenic fungi was isolated from the root of Chinese jujube (Zizyphus jujuba Mill). This endophytic bacterium was identified on the basis of its morphological, physiological and biochemical characteristics. This bacterium was also characterized by analyzing the homology of the partial sequence of its 16S rDNA. Results showed that this strain was Bacillus subtilis. Antagonistic characteristics displayed that PZ-4 strain could evidently inhibit the growth of eight pathogenic fungi, namely, Alternaria alternata, Allantophomoides carotae, Fusarium graminearum, Bipolaris maydis, A. alternata f. sp. mali, Cytospora sp., Botrytis cinerea and Botryosphaeria berengeriana f. sp. piricola. The inhibition rate of this strain against these eight fungal pathogens ranged from 41.2% to 69.3%. Moreover, the inhibition zone was evident, showing that the PZ-4 strain exhibited a wide antifungal spectrum. Therefore, this strain could secrete various antagonistic substances.
