Abstract:Because of the growing concerns about negative impacts of conventional agriculture among farmers and consumers, organic agriculture has been widely promoted by government. In practice, however, conventional agriculture has still dominated and more chemicals are applied in the fields. This study examined factors affecting farmers’ adoption of organic agriculture in Chiang Mai province by analysing the determinants of the adoption, through a survey of 77 households (37 organic rice households and 40 conventional rice households). A logit model was applied to determine the effect of farmer’s and farm characteristics, awareness, information, and perception on farmers’ adoption. The results showed that farmers, who were younger with low education, had more rice plots, and had positive perceptions on impact of organic agriculture on income and health, and, hence, they were more likely to adopt organic agriculture. To increase farmers’ adoption on organic agriculture, collaboration between government and other sectors are required. Price policy, organic agriculture campaigns for consumers, research and development on organic technology, and education policy will need to be implemented.
