Abstract:

Forest protected areas are pivotal ecosystems combining both economic and non-economic values and various interactions with gateway communities. Thus managerial plans should incorporate locals’ perceptions in order to preserve biodiversity and sustainable development. The data of the case study was collected with the use of a structured questionnaire aiming to represent the views of the forestall gateway community residents of the Troodos Forest National Park regarding the benefits arising from the forest resources as well as the problems of protected areas. Due to the key results, it is appointed that in Troodos Forest National Park the residents in gateway communities consider that non-economic values of the neighboring forest, like cleaning the atmosphere from pollutants and production of oxygen, are the most important values and forest fires as the main hazardous problem of the area.
