Abstract:

Selenium (Se) biofortification of pear-jujube is expected to increase the human dietary Se intake. A two-year field experiment was conducted in order to investigate the effects of soil addition, trunk injection and foliar application of sodium selenite on fruit Se concentration and quality in pear-jujube. The application of Se fertilizer to pear-jujube via the three approaches significantly elevated fruit Se concentrations with the increasing Se fertilizer levels. The Se concentrations in fruit treated with foliar application was 4.4–12.1 and 1.2–1.6 times greater than those treated with soil addition and trunk injection, respectively. This result was attributed to the fact that foliar application had higher fruit Se utilization than the other two approaches. The higher Se concentration in fruit led to the enhancement of the fruit quality in terms of fruit firmness, vitamin C, soluble protein, total soluble sugar, and organic acid content, which had a positive effect on the fruit yield of pear-jujube. Foliar application of Se fertilizer appeared efficient in increasing fruit Se concentration and in enhancing fruit quality in pear-jujube with the < 300 g ha-1 of Se fertilizer. This approach can be useful for producing Se- enriched fruits with the optimal Se content for human health.
