Abstract:

Most reaches of rivers in the mountainous regions of Taiwan are gravel-bed rivers. Thus, it is convenient to apply the digital image processing method for surface grain-size investigation of these rivers. The surface grain-size distributions (GSDs) in gravel-bed rivers are interesting for hydraulic engineers and others because of their role in regulating bed-load flux and GSDs, their values in environmental reconstruction, and their ecological significance for both invertebrates and fish spawning. Therefore, this research selected an area located in Nantou County, Taiwan, as the sample area to carry out a field test. We applied the automated image analysis, AIA method proposed by Sime and Ferguson to carry out a surface grain-size distribution survey 1. In addition, from the results of this field investigation and the GSDs, we expect to study the distribution of riffles and pools, and to explore the relationship between riffles/pools and ecological environments in the future.
