Factors affecting sustainability of agricultural projects on poverty alleviation in Gauteng Province of South Africa

Abstract:

In an effort to identify factors that affect sustainability of agricultural projects, data was collected from 160 farmers who were selected using random sampling technique and was gathered through the use of structured questionnaire, analyzed using frequency counts. The findings of the study show 40% are between age range of 50-59 years, female (50.6%), with no formal education (18.8%). The results indicated that 67.5% of the household are male headed. About  50% of respondents generate an annual income of less than R 200 000, (43.8%) of are cultivating less than 10 ha and 70% have less than 5 years of farming experience. Significant determinants of sustainability of agricultural projects for poverty alleviation are attitude (t = -2.71); impact (t = 5.86); farmer participation (t = 2.82), educational level (t =2.16); farming experience (t = -2.84,); farming income (t = 2.28); land tenure system (t = -2.58); and land acquisition method (t = -3.98).
