Evaluation of cardioprotective activities of tanshinone IIA and prostaglandin E1

Abstract:In this study, we investigated the cardioprotective activities of tanshinone IIA and prostaglandin E1. Ischaemia and reperfusion (IR) were induced in rat hearts. Results showed that tanshinone IIA and prostaglandin E1 increased LVSP, +dp/dtmax, -dp/dtmax, and decreased LVEDP in IR + tanshinone IIA (30 µg/kg) group and IR + tanshinone IIA (30 µg/kg) + prostaglandin E1 (30 µg/kg) group rats. In addition, tanshinone IIA and prostaglandin E1 decreased MDA level, and increased GSH, antioxidant exzymes activities in IR + tanshinone IIA (30 µg/kg) group and IR + tanshinone IIA (30 µg/ kg) + prostaglandin E1 (30 µg/kg) group rats. Moreover, combination of tanshinone IIA and prostaglandin E1 played a synergistic effect against myocardium damage induced by IR. It can be concluded that tanshinone IIA and prostaglandin E1 are effective antioxidants that are able to prevent myocardial ischaemia-reperfusion injury. We suggest that combination of tanshinone IIA and prostaglandin E1 may be useful as an adjunct to thrombolytic therapy in the management of reperfusion injury.
