Abstract:

Genetically modified (GM) foods productions have been criticized by many opposing parties despite claims that GM foods have beneficial effects on human health and environment. Thus, by identifying the current trend on genetically modified food issues, we can evaluate and identify any existing knowledge gaps. The main goal of this paper is to investigate the trends of published literature in journals on GM foods. In this preliminary study, a total of 100 GM food-related articles published in the time period of 2002 until 2011 (10 years) were retrieved from an online database, Science Direct for content analysis. The articles were categorized into six categories: themes, funding body, institutional affiliation, country of residence, country of research focus, types of GM food/crop, and direction of suggestion. The analysis showed that the research community has been giving more focus on the technical aspects of GM foods such the development of new GM crops, assessing the presence of genetically modified organisms in existing foods or feeds and reviewing existing regulatory issues. These findings reflect the neutral stance of majority of GM foods related articles. Majority of researches on GM foods were carried out in universities and research institutes in advanced countries such as Europe and North America. Researches were mainly funded by the government with GM corn and soybean as the targeted crops. Of the journals covering GM foods 75% articles were in the science and technology category compared to only 25% coverage in the social science journals.
