Abstract:

The purpose of the investigation was to study the effect of Ca2+ on the antioxidant systems in the Malus hupehensis Rehd. under salt stress. The results showed that the O2·- production rate, malondialdehyde (MDA) content, electrolytic leakage (EL), activities of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, POD, CAT and APX) and soluble proteins contents in roots and leaves of the seedling of Malus hupehensis Rehd. under salt stress were significantly higher than control (1/2 Hoagland nutrient media). The presence of calcium (10 and 30 mM concentrations) significantly reduced O2·- production rate, MDA content and EL, and increased activities of antioxidant enzymes and soluble protein contents in the seedling of Malus hupehensis Rehd. under salt stress. The addition of 10 mM calcium to the nutrient media showed a better effect than 30 mM calcium on improving the salt tolerance of the seedling. So, it can be concluded that the addition of external calcium can reduce the salt damage to seedling of Malus hupehensis Rehd. and improve its salt tolerance.
