Abstract:In modern pork production industry, various prophylactic measures (such as anti-infective drugs, vaccines, sanitation, vector control, the optimisation of housing management, nutrition regulation) are used to prevent and treat infections, however, many measures are facing failures and side effects in some infectious diseases, such as porcine circovirus associated diseases (infected by porcine circovirus), piglet edema disease (infected by shiga toxin type 2e (Stx2e)-expressing Escherichia coli ), and Glässer’s disease (infected by Haemophilus parasuis ). Compelling evidences indicate that arginine supplementation provided a useful adjuvant treatment in these infections; these findings have important implications for preventive medicine and animal production. This article reviewed arginine metabolism in mammals and arginine profile in infections, and provided the metabolic evidence for the beneficial role of arginine supplementation in infectious diseases.
