Abstract:

Food production is now a major concern for governments around the world, especially for China which has the world’s largest population. Strong demand for food has led to conflicts between humans and the natural world. This paper presents open innovation as a new paradigm for developing agriculture to meet food production needs and sustain human population growth in China. We summarized the open innovation experience applied to agricultural development in the Sanjiang Plain. Agricultural development in the Sanjiang Plain can be classed into three stages: unplanned, planned, and regulated. Internal (e.g. policy and laws) and external (e.g. international co-operation and funds) ecosystem protection policies have led to resource integration, sharply increased agricultural growth and rising grain production. The benefits of open innovation have been shown to be beneficial for government and farmers. Although open innovation is not a silver bullet to solve the conflicts between food production and population growth, it can serve as a useful paradigm for large scale agricultural exploitation in other countries and regions.
