Abstract:The present study evaluated the proximate composition of Haloxylon salicornicum plant collected from Cholistan Desert, Pakistan. Total 125 plant samples (stem and leaves) were collected from ten different locations in the area. Collected samples were washed, dried, ground and sieved through 20 mm mesh sieve. The powdered samples were analysed for chemical composition using standard procedures. The results showed that stem and leaves of Haloxylon salicornicum are rich in chemical components; therefore, Haloxylon salicornicum can be a good source of animal feed. Phytochemical investigation revealed the presence of alkaloids, tannins, saponins, glycosides and bound glycosides suggesting that plant can be useful in medicinal field. In conclusion, it is suggested that Haloxylon salicornicum has great medicinal and nutritional importance and can be good source of some important nutrients and can become a source of poverty alleviation for the poor local community of the area.
