Abstract:

Aqueous extracts that were obtained from the leaf, stem and root of Parthenium hysterophorus L. were used to determine their allelopathic potential in relation to the germination and seedling growth of two crop species, Raphanus sativus L. and Brassica juncea (L.) Czern., in laboratory bioassays. The leaf, stem and root extracts (100%, 50%, 25% and 5%) of P. hysterophorus inhibited the seed germination as well as hypocotyl and radicle lengths of two crop species. This inhibitory effect generally increased with increasing extract concentration. The order of this inhibitory effect was leaf > stem > root on two target species. The results revealed that the potential allelopathic effect of the alien invasive plant P. hysterophorus on R. sativus and B. juncea.
