Characterization of Sida hermaphrodita as a feedstock for anaerobic digestion process

Abstract:

The usefulness of Virginia mallow (Sida hermaphrodita) as a substrate in anaerobic digestion process was evaluated. The experimental material included the silage from first swath of this plant, which was collected in July 2010. Fermentation was carried out in bioreactors equipped with automatic process monitoring system and the control kit. The studies showed that Virginia mallow possessed appropriate physical and chemical properties, such as high content of organic dry matter, as well as proper C/N ratio to be used for biogas production. This was reflected in a high biogas and methane yield of 435 and 220 Ndm3 kg -1 of organic dry matter (ODM), respectively. The data obtained proved that the Virginia mallow is a good substrate for biogas production.
