Abstract:Two fundamental phases can be identified in the conservation of forest biodiversity: the conservation of seeds at low temperatures and the periodic multiplication of the vegetable material. Greenhouses can be successfully used for the second above-mentioned operation. It is extremely important to determine specific criteria in order to plan the multiplication and protection structures. More precisely, the attention has to be focused on: the form of the section, volume, cover material, internal microclimatic conditions, systems of heating and cooling and those for monitoring and control of the internal climatic parameters such as light, temperature, relative humidity. In the present paper the characteristics of a greenhouse – designed for vegetable material propagation which is necessary for the multiplication of forest species -have been defined. In order to reach the goal of biodiversity conservation, the most suitable solutions are identified among the most common types of greenhouses in the Mediterranean area. The most appropriate cover material is glass. However, if we consider the necessity to protect and to multiply forest species, semitransparent covers with photovoltaic cells can be used. This to produce energy coming from solar radiation surplus and leading to climate control in confined environment.
