Abstract:Composition of soil exchangeable base cations was compared between traditional plow tillage and conservation tillage in a case study in Liaozhong county of Liaoning Province, in order to provide scientific basis for comprehensively understanding the effects of conservation tillage on soil quality. The obtained results showed that conservation tillage significantly enhanced soil exchangeable K, Ca and Mg contents, and total amount of exchangeable base cations (SEB) in the upper 15 cm of soil in comparison with traditional plow tillage, indicating that conservation tillage resulted in higher soil fertility holding and buffering capacities. According to correlation analysis, this effect was closely related to soil organic matter and clay contents. In addition, a notable elevation in K/SEB and Ca/Mg ratios, and an obvious decline in (Ca + Mg) / SEB, Ca / K and Mg / K ratios were observed in the upper-15 cm of soil under conservation tillage compared with traditional plow tillage, suggesting relative enrichments of exchangeable Ca and especially K by conservation tillage. Stratification ratio values (0-5 cm / 5-15 cm and 0-5 cm / 15-30 cm) for exchangeable K, Ca, Mg and total SEB were significantly higher under conservation tillage than under traditional plow tillage, indicating that conservation tillage promoted their stratifications at 0-30 cm depth.
