Abstract:

Global carbon stocks and balances have become internationally very important to topics in the recent years. The objective of this research was to establish the organic and inorganic carbon stocks and their rate of the accumulation 120 cm depth in the Southeast region of Turkey. This region occupies about 7579805.2 ha area and has about 0.73 Pg organic and 1.71 Pg inorganic carbon stocks in the 120 cm soil dept, which is more than expected. The amount of organic carbon stocks depend mainly on the amount of the precipitation and the elevation. The rate of organic carbon accumulation in the 120 cm thick soil layer of the major soils is the highest (4.39 g C m-2 yr-1) for Non-calcic Brown Forest soils. In the organic soil profile it was 18.44 g C m-2 yr-1. Excluding the organic soil, high amount of organic carbon accumulation rates was found in the forest region. Despite the high slope angle, the accumulation rate was closely related to high precipitation in the area studied. The storage of organic carbon in the 120 cm thick soil layer of the major soils is the highest (18.45 kg C m-2) in the Non-calcic Brown Forest soils and the lowest in Non-calcic Brown soils (5.65 kg C m-2).
