Abstract:A green roof serves as an important technical application of low impact development (LID). It is capable of significantly reducing runoff generation through rainwater interception and utilisation by a vegetation layer and rainwater storage by a substrate layer. This study quantitatively investigates the runoff retention performance and a runoff model of green roof systems in Tianjin climate conditions by building a pilot scale facility for artificial rainfall. The result of the experiment confirmed that with increasing time, the ratio of the runoff retention decreases in accordance with a power function, and the theoretical formula was tested successfully with surveyed data. The influence of the thickness of the substrate layer and the structure of the drainage layer on the runoff retention performance and the runoff process was also quantitatively analysed under different rainfall intensities.
