Meta-analysis for responses of eucalyptus and pine inoculated with ectomycorrhizal fungi in Brazil

Abstract:

The population of soil fungi is essential to determine the distribution of plant species in a given landscape. For a successful reforestation program, it is crucial to find a fungi genotype that best adapt to the ecological conditions of a country. Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus sp.) and pine (Pinus sp.) have been widely introduced in Brazilian lands. When inoculated with ectomycorrhizal fungi (ECM) well adapted to the local ecological condition, the plant growth and development may be improved while the use of fertilisers is reduced. In Brazil, data of 23 studies with eucalyptus and 6 with pine, all species inoculated with ECM, were collected for this meta-analysis. The parameters obtained for plant growth analysis were aboveground dry weight, total dry weight and plant height, combined in aboveground responses. Meta-analysis for eucalyptus (n = 204) showed a significant increase in plant growth when inoculated with ECM fungi (55±10%). The ECM Pisolithus was the main genus studied (n = 127). The main studied eucalyptus species were E. dunnii (n = 104) and E. grandis (n = 96). For pine (n = 37), meta-analysis demonstrated a significant increase in plant growth (58±18%) when inoculated with ECM fungi, again the ECM Pisolithus as the main genus within this study (n = 17). The inoculation with Pisolithus tinctorius made pine growth increase by about 1.69 times. Meta-analysis results from studies in Brazil confirmed the benefits of ECM inoculation on eucalyptus and pine growth.
