Abstract:

Root-knot nematode is an important pathogen in soybean and little is known about the effect of soil water content on its reproduction. Therefore, the aim of this experiment was to assess Meloidogyne incognita reproduction in Rhodic Ferralsol and dystroferric Red Nitosol under three levels of water availability: field capacity (100% FC), 75 and 50% FC. Soybean was sown and then inoculated with 5000 nematode eggs. Thirty-six days after inoculation, the plants were collected and assessed for root fresh weight, number of galls, number of eggs/g root and leaf area index (LAI). Higher root fresh weight was observed in the Rhodic Ferralsol, especially at water availability of 100% FC. None of the treatments affected the number of galls. The number of eggs/g root was lower at moisture contents of 50 and 75% FC and in the dystroferric Red Nitosol. LAI was higher at 100 and 75% FC for both soil types.
