Abstract:

Municipal household solid waste (MHSW) collection in developing countries is a subject that has received much attention in recent years. Increasingly, the active engagement and support of households has been recognized as a key determinant of successful MHSW collection. This study uses Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to estimate the influence of household satisfaction on MHSW performance. SEM is particularly appropriate because it allows multiple dependent variables and the incorporation of latent variables. The empirical analysis is based on survey data of 2317 households in Harbin, China. The results indicate that households’ satisfaction with MHSW positively impacts collection performance. In addition, a number of demographic variables are identified as mediating the relationship between satisfaction and MHSW collection. These results can be useful for the design and modification of MHSW collection services. A further contribution is that it demonstrates the usefulness of SEM for the analysis of waste collection.
